Spartans Sports Highlights for the Week Ending February 12, 2002 from the Town News

Spartans pin Fort Lee and Ridgefield Park

Beating up on Fort Lee by a score of 62-17 and whipping Ridgefield Park 61-12 was the way Paramus prepped for the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group III post-season wresting team tournament on Saturday. The two victories upped the Spartans overall dual match record to a sparkling 16-2.
In the rout of the Brigdemen, Nick Buldo (103), Matt Raspanti (119), Nick Chinnici (125), Mike Santa Maria (152), Dan Gold (189), Vinnie Mancuso (215) and Larry Meyers (275) posted six team points apiece into the Spartans column by decking their opponents.
Pinning for Paramus in the win over Ridgefield Park were Tim Anderson (130), Kevin Moran (140), Al Morali (145), Mancuso (215) and Meyers (275).
Paramus edged in front 28-24 by halftime but Barringer surged into a 41-38 lead entering the final quarter and held off the Spartans down the stretch as Paramus dropped to 3-12 overall. Ralph Davis was the top gun on the Spartans attack, gunning 15 point through the twine. Adam Bilali chipped in with a dozen points that included a pair of treys while Kavi Jauhar netted 10 points.
Paramus was blanked 8-0 by Clifton in an NJIHL encounter on Monday.

Malacrida soars to gold in high jump invitational

Paramus' Jessica Malacrida turned in a gold medal performance in the Garfield High Jump Invitational last Tuesday. Malacrida sailed over the bar at 5 feet and picked up the gold medal on the criteria of fewest attempts.
Matt Raspanti (119) and Nick Chinnicci (125) decked their opponents to spark Paramus to a 36-26 victory over North Bergen in a non-conference wrestling matchup contested on the mats of North Bergen on Thursday evening. It was the Spartans 12th win in against a pair of setbacks.
Al Morali (145) and Vinnie Marano (215) registered technical falls while Mike Santana (135) and Kevin Moran (140) won by major decisions. Dan Cervino (160) and Mike Buldo (171) added three points apiece to the team scoring totals when they recorded victories by decisions.
Ralph Davis tickled the twine with a team-high 15 points but Paramus lost a 61-33 verdict to Paramus Catholic in an NNJIL boys' basketball game played on Tuesday. Adam Bilali nailed a pair of treys and Will Kochis fired in three traditional two-pointers as they both finished with six points and Matt Zablocki added four.
It was no contest as Paramus Catholic routed the Lady Spartans 66-15 after leading 36-11 at intermission. Kayleigh Brock hit the bucket with seven points and Erin Allan converted three free throws.

Bullen races to bronze in metric mile

Carol Bullen raced to a bronze medal finish at the Ridgewood Winter Games held Thursday at Rockland Community College in Suffern. Bullen was clocked in 5:40.3 as she placed third in the 1600-meter run. Her teammate Jessica Malacrida tied for third place in the high jump when she cleared the bar at 5 feet.
Jason Endrres hopped, stepped and jumped to a fourth place finish in the boys' triple jump competition. Endres finished with a top effort of 40 feet, 2 inches.
Paramus exploded on a 35-16 run that bridged the second and third quarters in routing Belleville 61-31 in an NNJIL boys' basketball game played Thursday in Essex County. Ralph Davis was the top gun on the attack, pumping a game-high 22 points through the iron. Adam Bilali chipped in with a dozen points, all of which came on three-pointers while Solomon Hossian added a 10-point effort.
In an NNJIL girls' basketball game played on Thursday in Paramus, the Lady Spartans defeated Belleville 45-35 after trailing 12-7 at the end of the opening quarter. Paramus outscored Belleville 27-12 over the following 16 minutes to lock up its second "W" of the season in 10 outings.
Rachel Ramirez tickled the twine with a game-high 16 points while Shannon Walsh made it a solid 1-2 punch, netting 15 points. Erin Allen chipped in with an 11-point performance.
Paramus dropped a 3-2 decision to Lakeland in ice hockey on Wednesday. Brian Sholtz netted both goals for the Spartans with his brother Steve and Scott McNerney picking up two assists each. Goalie Tom DiSalvatore came up with 24 saves.

Morali off to pinning start

Al Morali has his opponents falling all over him as he surged to a 9-1 start on the mat for unbeaten Paramus which has defeated its first eight opponents of the season. Morali, a junior, has decked eight grapplers, showing seven of them the gym lights in the opening period. He was awarded
On Wednesday, Morali needed 1 minute, 4 seconds to flatten Martin Dominques as the Spartans scalped the Indians from Passaic by a score of 61-18 in an NNJIL confrontation. Matta Raspanti (119), Kevin Moran (135), Mike Santana (140) and Mike Buldo (171) also came through with pins while Nick Buldo (103), Nick Chinnici (125), Tim Anderson (130) and Dan Cervino (160) were awarded forfeit victories and Dan Gold produced a 19-7 major decision against Roger Francisco in the 189-pound bout.
Ralph Davis netted a team-high 16 points, 10 of which came at the charity stripe, but Paramus fell to Montclair 65-49 in an NNJIL boys' basketball game on Tuesday in Essex County. T. J. Lyons chipped in with eight points while Will Kochis flipped seven points into the bucket.
Two days later, the Spartans fell to Teaneck 65-52 despite three players reaching double figures. Davis hit the hoop with 14-points, six of which were successful free throws. Matt Zablocki tallied 11 points and Adam Bilali added 10, including a pair of treys.
In an NNJIL girls' hoops encounter on Thursday, Paramus trailed Teaneck 25-22 going into the fourth quarter before falling 47-31. Shannon Walsh tickled the twine with 14 points while Rachel Ramirez netted 13.

Endres hops, steps and jumps to bronze at Pearl River Festival

Paramus' Jason Endres was in mid-season form as he turned in a bronze medal performance in the Pearl River Track & Field Festival held at Rockland Community College on Saturday. Endres hopped, stepped and jumped 41-5 1/2 to finish third in the triple jump competition.
In the girls' division, Jessica Malacrida sailed over the bar at 4-10 to finish third in the high jump and glided over the timbers to a fifth place in the 55-yard high hurdles, posting a clocking of 9.8 seconds. Her teammate Amanda Ax placed seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 30-0.
Paramus defeated Fair Lawn 51-43 in the third place consolation game of the Northern Highlands Girls Basketball Tournament on Friday. Rachel Ramirez pumped a team-high 18 points through the iron while Shannon Walsh tossed four her dozen points into the basket in the fourth quarter when the Lady Spartans went on a 28-11 run down the stretch to rally to their first victory of the season.
In the boys' division of the Northern Highlands Tourney, Paramus reached the final by defeating the host Highlanders 58-46 as Adam Billali and T.J. Lyons netted 11 points apiece and Vincent Barchini scored 10.
On Friday, Fair Lawn defeated the Spartans 56-32 in the title matchup. Ralph Davis was on target for the Spartans, tossing 15 points into the basket.
Vinny Mancuso placed fourth in the 215-pound weight division of the Bergen County Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament hosted by the Spartans who finished 13th in the team standings. Kevin Moran finished sixth in the 135-pound bracket.
Joel Miller turned in a hat trick performance, netting four goals and distributing an assist as Paramus routed Mountain Lakes 10-0 in the Ice House Tournament on Wednesday. Leading 2-0 after 15 minutes of action, the Spartans exploded with seven goals in the middle period as they upped their overall record to 6-0-1.
Stephen Scholtz added a pair of goals and distributed three assists while his brother Brian was credited with four assists. Peter Zgombic tallied a goal and picked up an assists with his brother Ivan dishing off a pair of assists. Richard Galgano, Tom Legregni and Bryan Smith added solo goals with Chris Androulakis, Joel Miller, Justin Sciari and Thomas Schmelzer picking up solo assists.
Tom DiSalvatore was perfect between the pipes, stopping all six shots on goal to preserve the shutout.
